Week 9 Summary of "23 Things"

The 9 weeks of "23 Things" was very interesting. There were several exercises that I found particularly helpful. Those include The NetLibrary; RSS feeds; and Wikis. I will be able to better assist patrons and serve their needs after learning about these various technologies. It is very important for librarians to stay abreast of the latest technologies so that when patrons ask about them, the librarians know what they are talking about.

Week 9 NetLibrary

I established an account at NetLibrary and searched for mysteries. There were several titles that I would possibly consider downloading. They include The Complete Patricia Cornwell Companion, Curtain : Poirot's Last Case, and Hard Truth.

Week 9 YouTube

The news and politics videos were interesting. I think that perhaps libraries should have a link to these on their websites so that the patrons can keep up with current events.

Week 8 Web 2.0

The tool that I visited was http://www.librarything.com.
There are several things that I like about the tool. They include the following:
The fact that you can search Amazon, the Library of Congress and 70 other libraries world wide and finding out what other people have been reading who are interested in the same things I am.

A link to this tool on public libraries' web site would be useful when patrons are wondering what to read next in a particular genre.

Week 7 Wikis

I found the Wiki information very interesting, and I learned possible ways that might help our library system offer wikis to better serve the patrons.

Two of the examples that I looked at were:

SJCPL Subject Guides:
- lays our information that helps patrons find what they are looking for more easily and faster

Library Success: A Best Practices Wiki:
- describes in detail the ways in which libraries can make the best use of wikis to serve the patrons.

Week 6 Web 2.0 and Library 2.0

I found the perspective about the new librarianship interesting. The perspective gives ideas on how libraries can better serve the changing population. For example, keeping up to date with new technologies and asking patrons what they would like the library to offer.

Week 6 Discover Technorati and learn how tags work with blogs

It was interesting to see what the top blogs and searches are for other people.

Week 6 Tagging and Discover Del.icio.us

This exercise was very informative. With the PLCMCL2 link, I read an article about myspace, which included ideas of how to deal with various issues that surround myspace. This article applies to me because of the number of teens that we have coming in to the library after school to get on myspace.

Week 5 Library Thing

The Library Thing website is very cool!! I like how it not only gives you the title and the author but also a picture of the book.

Here is the link to my Library Thing Catalog www.librarything.com/catalog/gstuckey.

Week 4: RSS

RSS will be helpful to me so that I can catch up on the news quickly. It will also allow library staff to keep up with library information and news quickly.

Week 3 Blog about Technology

The exercise about Flickr was interesting. I had never used Flickr before, and I found it very interesting about how to post pictures using Flickr and putting them on my blog.
